LawAmerica recently completed work for a client residing in Korea, verifying court records related to a past case in the U.S., obtaining official copies from the relevant court, and delivering them to Korea.

Police investigation records, arrest records, or court records related to past incidents in the U.S. may be needed in a variety of situations, including visa applications, green card and citizenship procedures, employment, insurance, or responding to civil disputes.

💡 Court Verification and Copy Issuance for Old Case Records

These days, cases can often be looked up online, but there are situations where the online case lookup systems alone make it difficult to view the full contents of a needed document or print it immediately.

U.S. court records, depending on the court and case type, often show only partial case information online. In particular, for old cases, cases kept as paper records, or sealed or restricted cases, online search results alone may not be enough to obtain the necessary court documents. California courts likewise advise that older records may be kept in off-site storage facilities, and that issuing copies can take several weeks.

💡 Why Applying Directly to the Local U.S. Court Is Necessary

When the needed materials are old or the documents cannot be found online, the following steps may be required:

  • Identifying the state, county, and court with jurisdiction where the case was filed
  • Reviewing basic information such as the case number, party names, date of birth, or approximate time of the incident
  • Confirming the types of documents needed
  • Requesting copies or certified copies from the court
  • Confirming any additional search fees and issuance fees
  • International shipping of the issued originals or certified copies to Korea

Because each court differs in the scope of records disclosed, issuance methods, fees, and processing times, it is important to accurately identify from the outset the documents that fit the purpose of submission.

💡 U.S. Records Can Be Obtained from Korea

Even if you reside in Korea, the record issuance process can be completed without visiting the U.S. police agency or court in person.

Based on the location and timing of the incident and the party's information, LawAmerica confirmed the agency with jurisdiction and whether the records were on file, reviewed the necessary power of attorney and identity verification documents, and then requested issuance from the local agencies, securing both the police records and the court records within three weeks.
